Get ‘The Skinny’ on ‘Edge of Tomorrow’!
I will admit that I was groaning a bit when I saw another Tom Cruise film was coming out. I was not wrong; but I was not right either. Major Cage, and Sgt Rita lead us on a wonderful voyage through the intricacies of time travel. Now you may be saying to yourself…eh this is just Groundhog Day. It is, but it is written so well. It certainly kept me guessing, I had no sense of time while watching. It felt like any moment could be the final one. The movie ended several times. Cage ( should have picked a different name I kept thinking of Nick Cage the whole time.) Always wound up right back on the deck, his head on a duffel bag, wearing those handcuffs.
In a way it was like a choose your own adventure story. Make this decision this time, time this just right the next fifty times…live the same day over and over, get to know the others in J squad intimately. I would have liked for them to have left out the romance part. It was not overt, and it was not a huge part of the story but it was still there. I suppose just as they said in Speed, tragedy brings people together.
Special effects were top notch. Watching the battle scenes was a delight. Watching Major Cage grow as a human being was also a delight. There is one little Easter egg that may or may not have been intentional.
Cage is standing in front of a war room being interviewed, that war room? the war room from War Games, a classic film starring Matthew Broderick that I happen to love.
Sgt Rita.
Cold, killing machine, war hero. Emily Blunt was a good choice for her. Bill Paxton as Sgt Farell. Nice comedic element, tiny shades of Chet (Weird Science) creeping into the character. J squad. the usual band of misfits. They each have their moment, one has his moment over and over again.
